Lyndon Kennedy's "Mechanical Plotter"
(Click to see another view)     (view movie  <1.4M>)

I constructed a mechanical plotter.  Simple typed commands from the user are translated into actual lines and shapes drawn on a piece of paper.  Commands like fd 10 or rt 30 will cause the pen to move 10 increments forward or 30 increments to the right, etc.  There are three motors.  One controls the movement along the x axis (left to right). The other controls the movement along the y axis (forward and backward).  A third motor controls the up and down movement along the z axis (the pen's vertical position relative to the paper)
